Well I've just put up another website. This time it is a free online article directory called ArticleDirectory.co.za. While the concept of article directories is not new, this is the first of its kind in the South African domain space (co.za). Article directories have great potential when it comes to online marketing and with such a resource now in the South African domain space I am hoping that people will start to make full use of the site to gain more exposure for their products and services. Of course the site is indexed by all major search engines, but what made this site so interesting is the use of RSS feeds to enable syndication of content by webmasters and newsletter publishers.
At time of writing ArticleDirectory.co.za has 29 article sections which are further organized into one or more categories. Each article section has been setup with its own RSS feed, so web users and webmasters can more easily subscribe to articles on a specific subject area. While web users and webmasters can subscribe directly to these feeds, the feeds are also syndicated into feedburner.com with the result content published on ArticleDirectory.co.za have an excellent opportunity to proliferate across the Internet. When ArticleDirectory.co.za users register they are immediately given rights to author their articles. The articles are screened in terms of the "Submit Guidelines" and once published are automatically made accessible on the website pages, via the ArticleDirectory.co.za RSS feeds and the feedburner.com feeds. Once published everything else is organic. To add some interactivity to the site, I've enabled the rating system and also a comments feature. It stands to be seen whether these will be used, I hope they will. Next I want to add automatic compilation of news letters for the sections, so that new articles are automatically added to newsletters that will be distributed once or twice a month. But I am getting ahead of myself. There is still much work to do on the site and I must find a way to get people to start publishing their stories. I am still not sure how to do this other than a long process of surfing the web and making contact with people who publish articles regularly. It's gonna be interesting.
