What's up with SuSE?
Tuesday, 10 October 2006

Darn, why do I get the impression that SuSE is going to the dogs?

I recently found some time to upgrade my main workstation from SuSE 10.0 to 10.1. You would think that not much could go wrong between these versions. Despite having made preparations and read the notes, SuSE upgrade from DVD just did whatever it wanted. After the upgrade I found that software had been removed, same with YaST repositories and whole bunch of things added for no obvious reason. The one that especially annoyed me is ZEN. Man, what a useless tool. Why do I want that on my desktop when YaST and YOU are so much better.

Enough Bad Service - Let's Complain Publically
Sunday, 27 August 2006

There is nothing like really getting pissed about something to motivate me into action. This morning my family and I planned to go watch a movie. The movie we want to watch was showing at the local Ster-Kinekor in Cresta shopping center. There it was in big bold red letters, “Pirates of the Caribean 2, 11:00”.

Here is were the problems start.

This revolutionary, home-grown technique by which everyday people are producing audio and video shows on just about every subject imaginable, so that others can download them for easy listening on portable audio players, seems to be everywhere. Now I wonder, can this new medium be applied in technical communications?

Whole Open Source Products
Monday, 17 July 2006

If open source projects are to mature they will need documentation that is at least equal to proprietary projects. The problem, at present, is that open source is still stuck in the 'enthusiasts mode'. Yes, it is trying hard to change, but I don't think the traction will take place until thinking turns from a strong source code focus to a more balanced look at developing 'whole products'.

Speaking on SOA
Monday, 09 August 2004
Open source, strategic sourcing and SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture), all three are the hottest topics of the time. Since writing the book 'SYSPRO on SOA' for SYSPRO, a leading vendor of enterprise resource planning software, I have had several speaking engagements. Probably the most important of these engagements has been speaking to SYSPRO customers, but the event that got the most coverage in the media is undoubtably the IDC/BMI-T "'SOA Forum".
